Following the budget flagship killer wagon, Asus introduced the Zenfone 5z, which had top-shelf specs, build quality and 2018 standards design, above average camera and a less bloated software experience; a perfect pedigree for a 2018 budget Flagship killer aiming straight to the OnePlus 6, while the successor of the Zenfone 5z, which will be the Asus Zenfone 6 is in the making. However, now the Zenfone 5z falls short in comparison to OnePlus’s newest offering which is the OnePlus 6T. Now, to counter that next year along with the OnePlus 7 which also be arriving next year, Asus needs to step up their game a notch higher and for that very purpose, the Zenfone 6 is here in these new leaked images.

And the evidence for the same has been spotted today in these newest leaks which shows us the early prototypes of the Asus Zenfone 6z. So, without wasting time, lets dive in and see what’s up with the Zenfone 6z. The leaked images here showcases the Asus Zenfone 6z next to its successor that’s the Zenfone 5z. Good news is that the Asus Zenfone 6 keeps the headphone jack as well as at the bottom you get two stereo speakers, means audio is one of the highest priority here.

Design of the Asus Zenfone 6 z

  • Side Notched design on the front
  • 6.2-inch bezel-less 120Hz display
  • Bottom chin is still present
  • 1080p+ IPS panel if a high refresh rate display (if not then an AMOLED Panel)
  • 2.5D curved glass with oleophobic coating

Starting straight with the notch, we have something new here but it’s not that we haven’t seen this before, we have a tiny notch similar to the Essential Phone(Ph-1), but this time it’s placed slightly towards right-hand side of the Asus Zenfone 6z. This notch on the right side houses the front selfie camera and nothing more. Which means the earpiece is still present within the top bezel which is super slim and hardly noticeable.

Moving the front camera with the notch to the right side, free’s up a lot of space at the center, giving you an illusion of a bezel-less display at the top. And notifications can also line-up one by one, instead of just displaying dots, so it’s a good move. However, those who like symmetric might not prefer the shifted notch look of the Zenfone 6z.

  • Snapdragon 855 2.4GHz Octa-Core
  • 10GB RAM, 8GB RAM and 6GB RAM models
  • Neural Engine performing more than half a trillion calculations

The Asus Zenfone 6 Specs will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 clocked at 2.4GHz which will be an Octa-Core processor based on 7nm which will be paired with at least 4GB RAM, 6GB and the top variant will arrive either 8GB RAM or a 10GB RAM could also be possible if Asus decides to pioneer in this area, by being the first one to offer 10GB RAM on the Zenfoone 6.

Storage option will range from 64GB, 128GB up till 256GB as well on the Zenfone 6z. Another separate processor or shall we say a co-processor is expected to join forces with the Snapdragon chip and this co-processor will be a neural engine to handle all the AI related tasks from camera image processing to the software user experience.

Furthermore, Asus could also include some tech that they created with ROG gaming phone, so the heat management from that device as well as the accessories could also make its way on the Zenfone 6z.

Camera and Software on the Zenfone 6 z

Now coming towards the rear, you get a typical Dual Camera setup, with one telephoto lens, or a high megapixel count sensor for some hybrid zoom abilities. But we expect to see a low-light monster with a f/1.6 aperture sensor. You also get the usual Dual-Tone LED flash and under this camera set up what looks like is a fingerprint reader, means the scanner is mounted on the back.

Furthermore, if you read the text displayed on the lock screen it says unlock your phone with Fingerprint, face or just by swiping up, means face recognition is here, however not as fancy as faceID. Because we can’t see an array of the sensor in the top notch or bezel.

While the possibility of an under the display fingerprint sensor is also low, as there’s nothing hinting at  the bottom portion of the display letting the user know that tap here for fingerprint detection which is present under the display and on top of that, another thing denying the presence of an in-display fingerprint scanner is the empty area below the Dual Camera cluster which clearly means the fingerprint scanner is on the rear only. But don’t forget this might be still in an early prototype stage, and Asus could later add one in the final production version.

The software here sees to be the regular toned downed version of Zen UI with machine learning abilities to keep your phone running smoothly as it was on the first day. Other things to expect is the addition of AR and AI voice assistant. The battery is expected to be around 4000mAh or 4400mAh which is the standard nowadays.

  • Base model 6GB/64GB or 6GB/128GB to cost around $375
  • Top variant 8GB/128GB could cost $420
  • While the 10GB RAM with 256GB storage of the Zenfone 6 could cost $550

Pricing will be again very aggressive as Asus will now feel the heat not only from the likes of OnePlus but also from the likes of Xiaomi’s Poco which will be unveiling the Poco F2 in 2019. So, the Asus Zenfone 6 will be priced somewhere below the OnePlus 7 and a little above the Poco F2.

Which brings it down to 24,999 INR, which translates into at least $375 for the 6GB RAM model, while the 8GB/128GB/256GB or the 10GB/128GB/256GB models will definitely command a premium of about $475 to $550.
