First things first, Redmi Note 5 known in India is simply called the Redmi 5 Plus in China. Redmi Note 5 Pro had already received the Android Oreo 8.1 update in the form of Global Stable ROM of MIUI 9.5.6 back in June. So, the users of Redmi Note 5 got concerned about the Oreo update for their devices.

The delay might be due to reasons such as software feature bug, optimizing the heavy MIUI skin or probably Xiaomi just put down the Redmi Note 5 in the list after Redmi Note 5 Pro. However, the good news is Android Oreo 8.1 has finally arrived with Global stable ROM MIUI 9.6.5.5.0 (OEGMIFD) for Redmi Note 5.

What’s new with Android Oreo 8.1 for Redmi Note 5

  • Face Unlock feature for the users of Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam (other country users will have to wait).
  • Updated Camera algorithms for optimized image quality
  • All Oreo 8.1 features are also here

The OTA updates will be rolling out to reach every Redmi Note 5 device later this week, so do check the update in your software update section. The steps will be Settings > About phone > System update > Check for updates. And you should be patient, because this update will cover the region in phases, gradually moving from one country to other. Such updates do not arrive on all smartphones at the same time.

The ROM update is precisely about 1.37 GB in size. If you can’t wait for the OTA update then you can opt to directly download the ROM files from Mi’s Official website & flash them via Updater app. Note that the Fastboot ROM requires an unlocked bootloader.
